By the end of 2025, a Dh350 million overhaul to the Nol card-based ticketing system in Dubai will have converted it to an account-based system with central wallet technology. According to a top official’s statement to Khaleej Times, the updated system would incorporate face recognition and other artificial intelligence technologies through a gradual implementation.
Currently, Nol users require a physical or digital card. The upcoming changes won’t eliminate this requirement; however, an account-based approach will allow users to link one or multiple cards, creating a centralized transport fare wallet technology. A digital wallet service will be integrated, facilitating electronic payments and storing e-tickets or documents.
The upgraded system promises innovation, supporting trip planning, booking, and pre-payment through smart channels. Additionally, it will offer integrated packages for diverse services, including family and group tickets, according to Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
Salah Almarzooqi, Director of Automated Collection Systems Department, highlighted the option for users to link multiple cards to their accounts, facilitating transactions and balance transfers. The use of facial recognition for payments is a key feature, requiring users to register their bio-data on the system.
The account-based system provides users with information on account balances, travel history, pricing, and fare calculations. It aims to streamline user management, including handling lost cards and other issues. The RTA emphasizes electronic security, with all issued cards linked to individual customer accounts, enhancing data security and privacy protection.
The upgraded system is designed for seamless integration across transit modes in Dubai. Advantages include technology upgrades, operational improvements, and personalized services. It also promises enhanced data utilization and analysis based on trip details.
Since its inception in 2009, over 30 million Nol cards have been issued, with a daily card use average of 2.5 million payment transactions worth Dh2 billion in 2023. Nol cards have played a crucial role in public transport and parking fee payments. In 2017, functionalities expanded to cover retail payments and entrance fees for public and private establishments.
According to Al Tayer, the upgrade represents a vital step in embracing global advancements in digital payment solutions and fintech. The new system positions Dubai at the forefront of technological evolution in public transportation and payment methods.
